Show notes

In April 2023, intelligence reports confirmed that China successfully collected data signals emanating from American weapons systems—not through a cyber hack or an insider mole, but by reading the invisible physical signatures those systems naturally emit. Welcome to the world of MASINT (Measurement and Signature Intelligence), formally recognized by the US Department of Defense in 1986 and often called the "forensic espionage" or "CSI" of the intelligence community. In this technical installment of the Robert Joodat Podcast , we look past what targets say (HUMINT) or transmit (SIGINT) to examine what their hardware physically is and does . We break down how scientific sensors measure intrinsic physical traces—from tracking nuclear reactors through solid walls via subatomic antineutrinos to detecting engineered camouflage using hyperspectral imaging in the short-wave infrared spectrum. We also analyze historical intelligence failures, including how over 1,000 ignored MASINT reports predicted the absence of Iraqi WMDs, and explore how AI-driven edge computing and sensor fusion are reshaping modern battlefield reconnaissance.
